Why is Specialty Lab Testing performed?

These tests go beyond routine blood work to give your doctor a deeper understanding of your hormone levels, metabolism, and how various endocrine glands in your body are functioning.

What can you expect during Specialty Lab Testing?

Here is what might happen depending on the test type:

1. Blood Tests

• A phlebotomist will draw blood—sometimes multiple vials—for analysis.
• The blood may be tested for hormone levels, antibodies, vitamins, or metabolic markers.

2. Saliva or Urine Tests

• May be done in-office or via take-home kit.
• Common for cortisol, sex hormones, or toxicology screens.

3. Stimulation or Suppression Tests

• You may receive a substance orally or by injection (e.g., glucose, ACTH, dexamethasone).
• Blood will then be drawn at intervals to see how your body responds.
• These tests often last 1–3 hours and are often supervised.

4. Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT)

• You’ll drink a glucose solution, then have blood drawn over a few hours to monitor how your body processes sugar.

5. Genetic or Functional Tests

• Sometimes done through blood, saliva, cheek swabs, or other tissue samples.
• These tests can evaluate gene mutations or metabolic pathways

What is the follow-up like for Specialty Lab Testing?

After the Test:

• Results Timeline: Specialty tests can sometimes take 1–2 weeks or longer.
• Interpretation: Your provider will schedule a follow-up with you to go over the results and discuss the next steps.
• Possible Outcomes:
  • Diagnosis confirmation or clarification
  • Medication adjustment or new prescriptions

Specialty tests  are generally safe and have minimal risks.  However, like any medical procedure, they can carry some risks or side effects, especially when the tests are more invasive or involve medications or biologic responses.
