Fibroscan

What is FibroScan?

FibroScan® is a non-invasive diagnostic test that measures liver stiffness using sound wave technology (transient elastography). It evaluates liver health and helps detect fibrosis or scarring without the need for a biopsy.

Preparation Instructions:

  • Fast for at least 3 hours before the procedure.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing for ease during the test.

Purpose of FibroScan:

This test assesses liver damage and fat accumulation, offering an effective, non-invasive alternative to traditional liver biopsy procedures.

How the Procedure Works:

The patient lies on their back while a probe is placed against the skin over the liver. Sound waves are sent into the liver, and the test—lasting about 10 minutes—may cause a mild vibration.

Understanding the Results:

The FibroScan generates two key scores:

  • CAP score: Indicates liver fat levels.
  • Fibrosis score: Measures liver stiffness and scarring.

Follow-up appointments are scheduled to review the results, recommend lifestyle changes, or initiate additional testing if necessary.

Risks and Safety:

FibroScan is generally considered safe and non-invasive with minimal associated risks.

Related Tests:

FibroScan uses advanced ultrasound-based technology to assess liver stiffness and can be complemented by other imaging or blood tests if needed.
