Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to fast before my appointment or blood work?
Fasting requirements depend on the type of blood work or testing ordered. Not all endocrine blood tests require fasting. If fasting is necessary for your specific tests, our office will provide instructions. If you are unsure, please contact our office before your appointment.
What insurance plans does the practice accept?
Insurance participation can vary by physician, plan, and type of service. We recommend contacting our office with your specific insurance information to confirm participation and contacting your insurance company to verify your benefits and coverage before your visit. Patients are responsible for understanding their plan’s copays, deductibles, coinsurance, and referral requirements.
Does Endocrinology Consultants offer telehealth appointments?
What is continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), and is it right for me?
CGM may be helpful for people with diabetes, hypoglycemia, or certain other glucose-management needs. Our endocrinology team can help determine whether CGM is appropriate for you and can help interpret the information it provides.
Can an endocrinologist help manage thyroid cancer?
Yes. Endocrinology Consultants evaluates and treats thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer. The practice preforms examinations, orders labs, and also offers thyroid ultrasound and ultrasound-guided thyroid aspiration biopsies as needed, as part of thyroid evaluation and as well as management.
How often should my thyroid levels be checked?
The appropriate testing schedule depends on your thyroid condition, medications, symptoms, and treatment plan. Your endocrinologist will determine which thyroid tests you need and how often they should be repeated. If you are starting or changing thyroid medication, testing may be recommended more frequently until your levels are stable.
Can hormones affect my weight?
Yes. Certain hormonal and metabolic conditions can contribute to changes in weight. Endocrinologists evaluate conditions involving the thyroid, adrenal and pituitary glands, reproductive hormones, insulin resistance, and other hormone and metabolic factors that may affect weight. Endocrinology Consultants provides evaluation and treatment for hormonal weight gain, obesity, nutrition, and weight management.
What causes unexplained weight gain?
Weight gain can have many possible causes, including changes in metabolism, diet, or activity, medications, sleep, stress, metabolic conditions, and hormonal disorders. Conditions involving the thyroid and other endocrine systems can sometimes contribute to weight changes.
An endocrinologist can evaluate your symptoms, medical history, medications, and appropriate laboratory testing to determine whether a hormonal or metabolic condition may be contributing to your weight.
Can an endocrinologist help manage PCOS?
Yes. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the conditions treated by Endocrinology Consultants. An endocrinologist can evaluate hormonal and metabolic concerns associated with PCOS and help develop an individualized treatment plan.
When should I see an endocrinologist for osteoporosis?
You may benefit from an endocrinology evaluation if you have osteoporosis, low bone density, an unexplained fracture, significant bone loss, or a condition or medication that may affect bone health.
Endocrinology Consultants evaluates osteoporosis and other metabolic bone disorders and offers in-office bone density testing and osteoporosis treatment.
Can osteoporosis be treated or prevented?
Yes. Osteoporosis can often be managed with a combination of lifestyle measures, adequate nutrition, appropriate physical activity, fall prevention, and medications when indicated. Early evaluation and treatment can help reduce the risk of fractures.
Your endocrinologist can assess your bone health and determine which preventive or treatment options are appropriate for you.
What are the symptoms of low testosterone in men?
Low testosterone may be associated with symptoms such as decreased sex drive, erectile difficulties, reduced energy, changes in muscle mass, decreased strength, mood changes, or changes in body composition. Symptoms can have many different causes, so appropriate evaluation and laboratory testing are important.
Endocrinology Consultants evaluates and treats male hypogonadism and low testosterone.

How do I get my lab results or get in contact with my provider?
For questions about your lab results, we prefer to review your results with you in person whenever appropriate. We can schedule your laboratory testing at the office and then schedule a follow-up appointment so your provider can review the results with you and discuss the next steps.
For other questions or to contact the office, call 201-567-8999.
How do I prepare for a FibroScan?
Please fast for at least 3 hours before your FibroScan. Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being examined. A FibroScan is a non-invasive test that uses sound-wave technology to evaluate liver stiffness and can also provide information about liver fat.
What should I bring to my first endocrinology appointment?
Please bring a list of your current medications and supplements, your insurance information, and any relevant medical and surgical records, laboratory results, imaging reports, or other records from your referring physician or other specialists. If you monitor your blood sugar, bringing your glucose readings or CGM information can also be helpful.
If you have been asked to complete laboratory testing before your appointment, please make sure those results are available to the practice so your endocrinologist can review them with you.
